The periodontal pocket

Periodontal disease is one that is caused by a bacterial infection. It presents as an inflammatory disease that is quite severe in nature. This is because the person’s body is attempting to fight against and destroy the harmful bacteria. If this is not cleared up in a fast manner, it can start to harm the person’s gum tissues.

The periodontal pocket of someone who has periodontal disease holds onto some substances that fuel this condition. They include the following:

  • Pathogenic bacteria
  • Plaque and calculus that has formed on the surface of the tooth
  • An epithelial lining that becomes ulcerated, containing bacterial by-products and granulation tissue.

How can we properly heal the pocket?

  • It is possible to heal the pocket by removing plaque and other debris on the tooth to keep the surface entirely clean
  • Conduct decontamination of the bacteria that is spread out on the pocket
  • Use curretage in order to create an even and clean epithelial lining without any tissue tags (epithelial remnants)
  • Initiation of the healing process through biostimulation
